Where can I buy Groceries?
The nearest grocery store is 25 minutes away near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. If you plan to use the kitchen you may want to stock up on groceries before you head up the canyon. We like Smiths which has many locations and a convenient order online/pickup service. If you forget something basic they might have it at the Solitude Resort Lodging mini-store. If you buy something at the mini-store be prepared to pay a premium.
Where can I rent Skis and Snowboards?
You can easily rent gear right at Powderhorn in Solitude Village. The advantage of renting on the mountain is that if you need to swap out gear they are right there at the base of the lift. They have a full range of gear to suit everyone. If you are looking for the best deal, or something specific, you may want to check with many of the many ski rental places in the valley. We have personally had good luck with AJ Motion which will also bring gear and fit you right in the condo at Solitude.
Do I Need A 4 Wheel Drive?
During a few times during the snow season the road up the canyon can be closed to all vehicles without 4WD or chains. Our advice is to be prepared with a vehicle with this in mind. If there is snow on the mountain you don't want to be in the valley. If you are planing a visit during peak times make sure to book a rental quickly as SUVs and other 4WD cars go fast.
Park City looks close on the map, can I just drive there?
We love Park City-mostly in the summer. It is an beautiful mountain town with amazing galleries and resturants. The shortest route to Park City is over Guardman's Pass which is closed during the winter. You can get to Park City in about an hour by heading down to Salt Lake City and connecting to I-80 East. We get our custom boots at Surefoot in PC. Every time we go over to Park City we are reminded that Solitude has much better snow and lacks suffocating hordes of people.
